The square clock tower sits on a bastion of the old Kale Kapısı, the land gate of Kaleiçi that was pulled down around the First World War. It is the meeting point of Kalekapısı, where the tram, the bazaar streets and Kaleiçi meet.

Good to know
- Sources differ on its date: Turkish Wikipedia gives 1901 (for Abdülhamid II), the metropolitan municipality 1921 (built on the initiative of refugees from occupied İzmir).
- The small dome on top is a copy added in the 2022 renovation; the original was there until the 1940s.
- Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque is right next to it and the Yivli Minare a two-minute walk west.
