The tower that started Sheikh Zayed Road: opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1979 as the centre of the Dubai World Trade Centre, it was then the tallest building in the Middle East and stood alone in the desert. In 2024 Dubai listed it among the modern buildings to preserve.
