The 5th-century double walls that defended Constantinople for a thousand years still run about 5.7 km from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn and belong to the UNESCO Historic Areas of Istanbul. At Edirnekapı, the old Gate of Charisius on the highest point of the old city, Mehmed II made his triumphal entry in 1453.

Good to know
- Combine it with the Kariye (Chora) Museum and Tekfur Sarayı, a short walk along the walls (Lonely Planet's suggested detour).
- Sinan's Mihrimah Sultan Mosque stands just inside the gate; Yedikule Fortress guards the southern end of the walls.
- Between Mevlanakapı and Yedikule, the historic Yedikule market gardens are still farmed at the foot of the walls (GoTürkiye).
