Conceived by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the preacher Harry Emerson Fosdick as an 'interdenominational, interracial and international' church, it is the tallest church in the United States, with a 392-foot Gothic tower holding the 74-bell Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon, the heaviest in the world. It has a long history of social-justice activism and hosts free concerts and community events.
