The big lawn between Grünerløkka, Rodeløkka and Tøyen was a cemetery from 1858, first for the city's poor, then Christiania's main burial ground; it was cleared in stages and finished as a park in 1972. The walled Jewish burial ground from 1869 still sits beside Sofienberg church.
