The largest square in Paris, laid out from 1755 as Place Louis XV, where more than 1,000 people were guillotined during the Revolution, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette among them. The 3,200-year-old Luxor obelisk, set up in 1836, stands on the axis from the Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe.

- Stand by the obelisk for the view down the Tuileries, up the Champs-Élysées and across to the Eiffel Tower.
- The 23-metre obelisk also works as the gnomon of a giant sundial.
