Two sculptures by the Czech-American architect John Hejduk near the Faculty of Arts, where Jan Palach studied before he set himself on fire on 16 January 1969 against the Soviet occupation. The pale 'House of the Son' stands for Palach, the dark rusted 'House of the Mother' for his mother; a plaque carries David Shapiro's poem 'The Funeral of Jan Palach'. Unveiled on 16 January 2016, it is where students lay flowers each January; visitors heading for the Rudolfinum walk past.
