Ancient Rome core: Colosseum to the Ghetto

The imperial centre in one line: amphitheatre, Forum and Palatine, then the Capitoline and down into the Jewish Ghetto for lunch.

    Colosseum

    Timed entry; 60-90 min inside.

    The largest amphitheatre ever built (AD 70-80); the Full Experience ticket adds the arena floor or the underground passages where animals and scenery were hoisted up.

    AD 315 triumphal arch beside the Colosseum; 5 min.

    Palatine Hill

    Enter from Via di San Gregorio; Farnese Gardens view; 45 min.

    Ruins of the imperial palaces of Augustus, Tiberius and Domitian, the House of Livia, and the Farnese Gardens terrace looking straight down onto the Forum.

    Walk the Via Sacra downhill; 60 min.

    The civic heart of ancient Rome: walk the Via Sacra past the Curia, the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Temple of Vesta and the Basilica of Maxentius in one continuous site.

    Capitoline Museums

    Michelangelo's piazza; view terrace behind Palazzo Senatorio is free; museum 90 min optional.

    The world's oldest public museum: the original bronze Marcus Aurelius, the Capitoline Wolf and the Dying Gaul, plus the Tabularium gallery with a view across the whole Forum.

    Theatre of Marcellus

    Ancient theatre with a Renaissance palace on top; 10 min.

    Pizza ebraica at the Ghetto bakery; 10 min (closed Sat).

    Unsigned kosher bakery run by the same family for generations; the pizza ebraica fruitcake and ricotta-and-sour-cherry tart are Roman-Jewish specialities.
