A huge national government park on a former air base in Tachikawa, opened in 1983 for the 50th anniversary of Emperor Showa's reign. Fields of tulips, poppies and rapeseed in spring, a Japanese garden of maples and ginkgo avenues in autumn, and a bike-only track network make it a full day out.
