A 19th-century fortress on the lagoon edge about five kilometres from the historic centre, where volunteers held out against the Austrian siege of 1849 during Manin's Republic of San Marco. Now owned by the Comune as a public park and venue for events and cultural production; since 2018 it has hosted Biennale special projects, and it is a Biennale Arte 2026 venue.

Good to know
- In March 1848 Mestre residents and railway workers forced the Austrian garrison to hand over the fort (it.wikipedia).
- Google lists long hours (until midnight Tue-Sun); bars and events make it a mainland evening spot for locals.
- Check the Biennale site for which special projects are in the fort during the exhibition (Biennale Arte runs until 22 November 2026).
