In 1468 the Venetian Senate turned this Benedictine island into the world's first preventive quarantine station: ships' crews and suspect cargo waited out 40 days here. The Tezon Grande, a huge 15th-century warehouse, still carries graffiti scratched by the merchants held inside. Volunteers of the Archeoclub di Venezia rescued the island after the army left in 1975; visits include a walk on the salt marsh around it.
