The national theatre, founded in 1776 by Joseph II as the Court and National Theatre and in this Ring building by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer (1874-1888) since 1888. Tours take you up the grand staircases with ceiling paintings by Gustav Klimt, his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch, past the busts of playwrights and into the stage machinery.
