Vienna's 'jungle': about 2,300 hectares of Danube floodplain forest, almost a quarter of the Donau-Auen National Park. Once an imperial hunting ground much used by Crown Prince Rudolf, it was protected from 1905 and given largely to the city by Karl I in 1918. Over 800 plant species and 100 breeding bird species live here, including beaver, white-tailed eagle and the kingfisher, the park's emblem.
