The open-air museum on the mouth of the Creek where the ruling family lived: 22 pavilions in about 80 restored coral-stone and gypsum houses, the largest heritage museum in the UAE. Start with the flagship pavilion, Dubai Creek: Birth of a City, which uses film, old photographs and objects to show how pearling, fishing and trade families lived on the water before oil.

Good to know
- One ticket opens every pavilion, so plan half a day and walk the lanes between houses.
- Do not skip the Perfume House, the home of perfumer Sheikha Sheikha bint Saeed Al Maktoum: smell oud, rose, musk and luban at its stations; workshops run on weekends.
- Go late afternoon and finish with the sunset over the Creek and the abra traffic.
- Cafés and eateries sit in the visitor centre and along the Creek.
