Madrid's largest park (1,535 ha), a royal hunting estate from Felipe II's time handed to the people of Madrid on 1 May 1931. It was a Civil War front line and military structures from the battle still stand in the woods; today it is the city's big weekend escape, with a flat 4 km botanical trail along the Meaques stream and the remodelled lake.
