Rampe Major and the Rock's gates

Rampe Major

Monument

The old way up the Rock: a red-brick stepped ramp from Place d'Armes through two fortified gates, built in 1533 and 1714, to the Palace square. The 1533 Porte Major is the gate the Comité des Traditions put on its emblem; the carriage road beside it, Avenue de la Porte Neuve, only came in 1839.
