Opened in 1923 on boulevard du Montparnasse, the café of Hemingway, Cocteau, Picasso and later the Beat Generation; Godard shot a scene of 'À bout de souffle' here. The banquettes, marble tables and white-aproned waiters are little changed, and Time Out says it still draws the neighbourhood's thinkers rather than only tourists.
