The Natural History Museum's museum of humankind, founded in 1937 in the Palais de Chaillot. In a dim mezzanine room you can stand inches from the ivory Venus of Lespugue, and the fossil hall shows the 28,000-year-old 'old man' of Cro-Magnon and Descartes's skull.
