The church of a former abbey destroyed by the Vikings and rebuilt, named in the 8th century after Saint Germain, a 6th-century bishop; the lower levels of the bell tower, the nave and the transept are its oldest parts. The City of Paris and the parish restored the 19th-century nave murals to their original colours, and René Descartes is buried here.
