One of the largest squares of the old town, between Am Hof and the Schottenstift, lined with city palaces. The name probably comes from the exemption of the Scottish (Irish) monastery's precinct from city jurisdiction; it has been used for the whole square since 1710. The Austria fountain designed by Ludwig Schwanthaler dates from 1846.
