Russia's capital grew in rings around the Kremlin: the walled Kitay-gorod merchant quarter, the Boulevard Ring and the Garden Ring, with the Moskva river curving south past Zamoskvorechye and Gorky Park. Muscovites eat at Georgian and Uzbek places as much as Russian ones, ride a metro whose stations are museums of Soviet design, and spend weekends in the old estates, parks and banyas.
