Brazil's former capital spreads between granite peaks, the Atlantic and Guanabara Bay: the colonial and Afro-Brazilian Centro and port (Pequena África), bohemian Lapa and Santa Teresa on the hill, and the beach neighbourhoods of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon below Sugarloaf and Corcovado. Cariocas live on the beach by posto number, at the counter of the corner boteco with a chope, at Monday samba in the old port and in the North Zone's samba schools, with Niterói a short ferry ride across the bay.
